How to Clean an Area Rug on a Hardwood Floor

An area rug and the hardwood underneath it need separate care plans. A method suitable for the rug may be unsuitable for the floor, its finish or the rug backing. Before treating a spill or arranging a deeper clean, check the care instructions for both surfaces.

This guide updates our historical area-rug article at its original address. The advice below prioritizes manufacturer instructions and avoids a universal cleaning recipe.

Start with the rug and floor instructions

Identify the rug’s material, backing and care label, along with the floor finish if you know it. Keep this information available when discussing a cleaning method. If a label is missing or the material is uncertain, ask for an assessment before applying a product or using wet equipment.

A recommendation for one rug does not establish that the same method is suitable for another. Do not assume that a household carpet cleaner, steam cleaner or pressure washer is appropriate for an area rug.

Keep moisture away from the hardwood

Do not shampoo or soak a rug while it rests on a hardwood floor. Moisture can reach the floor through the backing or edges, and a surface that appears dry may still have moisture underneath.

Bona’s floor-care guidance warns that too much water or unsuitable cleaning ingredients can damage hardwood. Follow the flooring manufacturer’s instructions for the actual finish. A rug-cleaning product is not automatically a floor-cleaning product.

For a fresh spill, use a clean absorbent cloth to contain the liquid, then check underneath if the rug can be moved safely. Avoid dragging a heavy or wet rug across the floor. When moving it is impractical, ask a cleaner how the floor will be protected and whether the rug needs a different cleaning location.

Discuss routine care and deeper cleaning separately

Follow the rug manufacturer’s directions for vacuuming, including any restrictions on brushes, fringe or backing. Before using a spot-treatment product, check that it is suitable for the material and follow its label and testing instructions. Do not mix cleaning products or assume a homemade mixture is compatible with either surface.

Tell the cleaner about stains, odors, previous treatments and any visible damage. Ask what can reasonably be improved and what may remain. Cleaning cannot be promised to reverse wear, color changes, backing damage or damage to the wood.

Return the rug only when the surfaces are ready

Ask how the rug and backing will be checked before they are returned to use. Confirm that the floor is dry too, and follow the rug, pad and flooring manufacturers’ instructions. There is no single drying time that applies to every rug or room.

Ask about the right service before booking

Our hardwood floor-cleaning page describes the existing floor service; it does not mean every rug material is accepted. For a property in Conyers or another listed service area, contact us to discuss the rug, the floor and an estimate. Confirm whether the proposed work includes the rug, the floor, or both before scheduling.
